Braves to Unveil New Weekend Home Uniforms

Braves Throwback Jersey's for 2012
The Braves will unveil a new crème-colored home uniform on Monday that will probably seem familiar to fans of a certain age.
The design closely resembles the home uniform worn by the Hank Aaron-led Braves during their first two seasons in Atlanta in 1966-1967, right down to the player number instead of a tomahawk beneath the “Braves” script on front of the jersey.

The new home-alternate uniform (right) will be worn for weekend home games. The traditional home white (left) will be worn Monday-Thursday, and red jerseys on Friday.
The new attire will serve as an alternate uniform for home games and won’t replace any of the other four uniforms currently worn by the Braves. The initial plan is to wear it for Saturday and Sunday home games.
The Braves’ red jerseys worn for Sunday home games in recent years will be switched to Friday home games, said Derek Schiller, Braves executive vice president of sales and marketing. Traditional white home uniforms will be worn Monday through Thursday.
For road games, grey uniforms will continue to be the Braves’ primary garb, and the team will wear its navy blue alternate road jerseys when the starting pitcher chooses.
Unlike with the navy and red jerseys, the new uniform has matching pants the same color as the jersey. The Braves will wear their regular red-billed cap with the new uniforms.
“As is the case in a lot of clubhouses, if a starting pitcher really strongly feels like he wants to wear those [new uniforms for a non-weekend game], then we’ll have that discussion and if it makes sense, we will,” Schillar said. “But the plan is, we’ll definitely be wearing them Saturdays and Sundays.”
The crème color is the same as the San Francisco Giants’ home uniform and a Philadelphia Phillies alternate.
The new jerseys, including a less-expensive replica, will be sold through Friday exclusively at the Braves clubhouse store at CNN Center and Academy Sports+Outdoors locations in the Southeast. They’ll be available elsewhere after five days.
Braves players will wear the jerseys for remaining stops on the team caravan that ends this week. Academy Sports+Outdoors sponsors the caravan.
Schiller said the new uniform was “ultimately a John Schuerholz decision” stemming from the team president and longtime former general manager’s desire to “re-connect with the team’s history.”
There is no tomahawk on the chest, but two crossed tomahawks are incorporated in a sleeve-patch logo along with “Atlanta Braves” and “1876,” the year when the National League franchise debuted as the Boston Red Caps. The Braves often cite their status as “the longest continuously operating franchise in Major League Baseball.”
The new logo is on the left sleeve, replacing a screaming Indian chief patch featured on Braves uniforms in 1966-1967. Besides that political-correctness change, the other big difference in the new uniform is player names on back. The old ones didn’t have those.
